Strengthening Family & Community

Walk With-Disaster Recovery

The Step by Step Project was initiated following Gateway’s significant role (via the Step by Step team) in psychosocial recovery following the 2013 bushfires.  Some years down the track, we were successful in obtaining a grant through the NSW Office of Emergency Management’s Community Resilience Innovation Program (CRIP).  We have used this grant to develop the Walk With online training tool.  Walk With translates the lessons learned from the Step by Step experience and integrates these with evidence informed best practice in disaster resilience.

Walk With delivers two short online courses that engage the strengths and skills of workers in place based community services and provides them with professional orientation to the world of disaster response and recovery.

Walk With has been developed in stages with the early iterations of the tool being piloted with a number of community organisations across NSW (Northern Rivers, Wollondilly, Newcastle, Tamworth).   Feedback from these organisations has been vital in ensuring accessibility, useability and relevance of the Walk With tool.  Gateway has partnered with the Universities of Sydney and Newcastle to evaluate the effectiveness of Walk With and will publish the findings later in 2018.   Walk With has been presented at a number of important conferences including the 2018 Australia and New Zealand Emergency and Disaster Management Conference, and the Australian Social Recovery and Resilience Group forum.  Walk With will be launched on October 29 2018.
